Welcome to CISS1950.org.uk
This is the homepage of the Channel Islands Specialists Society .
Thanks for visiting our site. We hope to interest you enough so that you realise that you would like to join the Channel Islands Specialists’ Society. It may be a posh title, but we really are a very friendly and informal lot, so please browse our site, and perhaps leave some feedback via the forum.
A Welcome to new members:
It’s now 2010, and it’s our 60th Anniversary, yes it’s our Diamond Anniversary Year 1950 -2010
above is the logo that after much discussion at Committee meetings Moira decided we were going to have. It’s also at the top of each page on the website.
Now the exciting bit.............
Membership is available just click on the contact us button........ or here!!
What we do...
The Society meets 3 or 4 times a year usually in London or sometimes in other parts of the country.
In addition, each year we have a weekend meeting, which might be in the Channel Islands or in other parts of the UK, or even in other parts of Europe. ( It’s OK, we do tell you where each meeting is. )
We publish our journal ‘Les Iles Normandes’, four times a year. It is full of interesting articles submitted by the members of the CISS themselves.
‘Exchange packets’ are circulated regularly in the UK and the Channel Islands, but unfortunately high postage costs make extending the circuits to other countries impossible.
There are two Society auctions a year, a chance to sell those extras that you no longer need, or to buy those sometimes elusive items...
The Society owns the copyright and the publishing rights to books that have become the standard works and mainstay to many collectors and those studying the Islands. Many of these have been out of print for some time, but due to the wonders of the electronic age, we will soon be able to make these available again to purchase as E-books.
Annually we hold a Competition Day, usually in February when all members are invited to compete, there are trophies and awards for all classes including overseas entries.
So.. What’s it all about......
A potted history,
The Society was founded back in 1950, hence CISS1950, by Bill Newport and John
Simpson, to study the stamps and postal history of the Channel Islands. Occupation
history and postcards have become an important part also.
Not only the larger islands of Jersey, Guernsey and Alderney, but the smaller
islands of Sark, Herm, Jethou, Lihou, Brecqhou, Les Minquiers, Les Ecrehous and the
French Channel Islands.
There are many more minor Islands none of which have officially issued postage
stamps.

Jon Aitchison giving his presentation on
‘The Former Railways of Guernsey and Herm.’
The AGM 2010.
A slightly different format was adopted this year with each member attending being given, upon arrival, reports from each of the Committee members, which they could read at their leisure, with the intention that the formalities of the election of Officers and Committee members could be kept as short as possible.
Important as they are, everybody preferred to spend as much of the day as possible on the displays and the main presentation.
With 21 members attending, the new format resulted with the AGM formalities taking just under an hour, leaving the rest of the day to be filled with 9 displays and the main presentation.
How many railways???
That was the question, that was on every ones lips as we sat in disbelief as Jon Aitchison unfolded a marvellous presentation on the ‘The Former Railways of Guernsey and Herm.’ The main presentation for the AGM.
Not only were there your standard railway, but quarry railways, steam railways, electric railways, dockside railways and of course Occupation railways.
Jon has been good enough to allow us to put some of the slides from his presentation on the website, and hopefully we can put them all up on their own page in the archive.
Dr. John Marsden .. Auctioneer Extrordinaire!
After holding the post for 10 years, John has decided to hang up his gavel and retire as Auction Secretary. Despite this very time consuming task, John has carried it out tirelessly and with his efforts, we have seen sales go from strength to strength. In the last two years alone, the auction profits have amounted to over £2100, a very important contribution to Society funds.
Thankyou John for your sterling efforts over the years.
John’s successor is Gavin Wood, who we are sure will continue the good work, you have some big boots to fill Gavin.
