RULES OF THE C.I.S.S. COMPETITIONS

MEMBERS UNABLE TO ATTEND THE MEETING ON COMPETITION DAY MAY SUBMIT THEIR EXHIBITS TO EITHER THE COMPETITION SECRETARY or SOCIETY SECRETARY.

Exhibits MUST be in an envelope or folder. These MUST be labelled with the class into which they are being entered.

1. The C.I.S.S. Competitions shall be open to all members.

2. A member may submit up to three entries in any one competition and may enter more than one competition.

3. The subject matter shall comprise philatelic or related material of the Channel Islands and the French Islands of Manche and Ile et Villaine Departments only, (hereafter referred to as C.I.).

4. ALL the Society Competitions are held on The Competition Day.

5. THE SOCIETY CUP FOR STAMPS shall be awarded for entries of a specialised nature, showing personal study and research. All postage and revenue stamps issued within this Island group may be entered. Entries shall comprise 16 sheets, not exceeding 12 x 10ins. Artwork and proofs may be included in the entry. Inclusion of First Day Covers is acceptable.

6. THE SUSSEX CUP FOR POSTAL HISTORY & POSTAL MARKINGS   shall be awarded for entries of a specialised nature showing personal study and research. This class may include pre-stamp, C.I. postmarks on piece or cover and aerophilately. This class can include any mail to or from or between the Channel Islands. Entries shall comprise 16 sheets, not exceeding 12 x 10ins.

7. THE TOM GREEN CUP FOR OCCUPATION POSTAL HISTORY & POSTAL MARKINGS shall be awarded for entries of a specialised nature showing personal study and research. This class can include Letters, markings, Postmarks and Postal History of the Occupation period, including Red Cross. Ephemera such as permits are excluded from this class. Entries shall comprise 16 sheets, not exceeding 12 x 10ins.

8. THE PICTON PHILLIPS CUP FOR GENERAL ENTRIES –This competition shall have its main emphasis on originality, presentation and treatment of subject. Entries should be predominantly stamps and/or postal history. Entries may include postcards and/or ephemera.  Entries shall comprise of 16 sheets, not exceeding 12 x 10ins. This competition shall be judged by all members present.

9. THE STANLEY NEWMAN TANKARD shall be awarded to the best first time entrant in any class.

10. THE SARNIA TROPHY FOR SOCIAL PHILATELY shall be awarded for entries of 16 sheets showing personalised study and research. Social philately represents the study of the development of a social activity or enterprise. The exhibit may include up to 50% non philatelic material such as letters, postcards, tickets etc. The function of the non philatelic material is to amplify and develop the story which should have a beginning, middle and end.

11. THE SOCIETY PLATE FOR CHANNEL ISLAND LOCAL ISSUES shall be awarded for entries of a specialised nature, showing personal study and research. All local stamps and covers issued within the Channel Island group may be entered. Entries shall comprise 16 sheets, not exceeding 12 x 10ins. Artwork and proofs may be included in the entry.

12. THE SOCIETY CUP FOR POSTCARDS shall be awarded for entries of 12 sheets, not exceeding 12 x 10ins., containing postcards (picture side only) of the Channel Islands, on any subject relating to the islands. This includes postcards on a Channel Island theme. The entries shall be judged by members present.

13. EPHEMERA COMPETITIONS CUP shall be awarded for entries of 16 sheets of C.I. material showing personal study and research. The entries shall be judged by members present.

14. ABSENT MEMBERS/OVERSEAS competition is open to ALL SOCIETY members, (including U.K., CHANNEL ISLANDS and OVERSEAS) and shall be of a general class covering postage stamps, postal history and general. Members who enter this competition should NOT write their names on their sheets. Entries shall consist of 16 photocopied sheets (non-returnable), not exceeding 12 x 10ins.

15. The Committee shall be responsible for appointing judges - if necessary, with a separate judge for each competition.

16. Trophies shall be awarded to the winners of the various competitions. A suitable replica and certificate will be awarded to each winner. Winners will be responsible for engraving the trophies which will be kept for one year and MUST be returned by or on the next Competition day.

17. If, in any Competition, there are (in the opinion of the judges if appointed and two Committee members) insufficient entries or the entries are of too low a standard no award shall be made.

19. Sheets winning a competition shall not be entered again in that competition at any time.

20. INSURANCE – Members are advised to arrange adequate insurance on their entries for the time they are out of their hands. Neither the Committee nor The Society can accept any responsibility for the safe custody of any entry or part thereof at any time.

21. All entries are accepted on the understanding that the members abide by these rules and that in the event of any dispute the Committee’s decision is final.

22. All entries may be sent to the Competition Secretary or Society Secretary, whose addresses appear in the front of The Society Journal, Les Iles Normandes, or they may be brought along in person on the day of the competition.

23. Competitions to be judged by outside Judge:

  • Society Cup for Stamps
  • Sussex Cup for Postal History
  • Tom Green Cup for Occupation Postal History
  • Sarnia Trophy for Social Philately
  • The Society Plate for Channel Island Local Issues
  • Absent Members/Overseas

24. JOAN FLOOD SALVER may be awarded at the A.G.M. for the best piece of published research on a Channel Island topic. There shall be no formal entries, but the award shall be made by the Committee on considering published research that is brought to their attention during the year. The entries for this award will be discussed at the Committee Meeting immediately prior to the A.G.M. Society member(s) whose articles are being considered for this.
