Jersey Stamps.
British postage stamps were used from 1840 - 1969, with the exception of the years of German Occupation, 1940 - 1945; even then, the stamps produced were issued by British postal officials and recognised by the Postmaster General, and for almost a year after liberation, these stamps remained valid until 13th April 1946 for use on letters addressed to all parts of the world.
During the Occupation, the Germans overprinted stamps of King George VI with a Swastika and ‘Jersey 1940’, although these were never issued, and were meant to have been destroyed, several sets and a few singles do still exist.
BEWARE, many stamps have been overprinted since their issue, and with the advent of personal computers, recently overprinted stamps are available in large numbers.
The Bigwoods 1d scarlet was prepared, but never issued, it too was overprinted with a Swastika and ‘1940’, again examples do exist, but due to the originals being so rare, recent overprinting has not been an issue yet.
The ‘Arms’ stamps, Jersey’s first true postage stamps were issued the 1d scarlet on 1st April 1941 and the ½d green on 29th January 1942. The Pictorials, a set of six, were issued in three pairs, ½d and 1d on 1st June 1943, 1½d and 2d on 8th June 1943, and finally 2½d and 3d on 29th June 1943.
1958 saw the issue of the first of the Jersey regional stamps, a series which went on being issued with changes from watermarked to unwatermarked paper, the introduction of phosphor bands, and colour changes until 1969.
1st October 1969 heralded Postal Independence for Jersey, and with it their first truly independent stamp issue.
This day also saw the first stamp booklets issued, and the first postage dues.
There was also a commemorative issue for the Inauguration of the Post Office.
Up until now all stamps were issued in £.s.d. With the change to decimal currency on 15th February 1971, new definitive stamps of the same designs and
colours in equivalent decimal values replaced all earlier issues which became invalid for use.
The JerseyTourism set of 6th June 1975 saw the first minisheet, and the first of the ‘Europa’ series followed on 1st May 1978.
The Jersey Post Office Year Book was first issued on 4th November 1986, and self adhesive stamps arrived on 12th February 1997, with the ‘Lillie the Cow’ set.
