October 2011 - New Publication:
A new book Letter Forewarding Agents of Great Britain handling Channel Islands letters 1673-1855 by our President David Gurney FRPSL, has just been published by the Stuart Rossiter Trust. The book is the product of twenty years of research into the Agents, usually merchants or shipowners in the Channel Islands, London or some of the south coast ports, who handled letters, mainly commercial and some personal, to and from the islands before the establishment of a regular packet service with the Channel Islands in 1794, and for some time after this. Such letters were usually, but not always, marked or endorsed with the agent's name either in the form of a manuscript endorsement or by means of a handstamp. Additional charges to be recovered were often added.
One hundred and forty Agents are included in this 170 page book. There is an alphabetical listing showing the name of each agent recorded and many illustrations of actual letters are shown, along with examples of endorsements and other aspects.
For more details of the book, which costs just £9.50, and to order it, click on www.rossitertrust.com
