There are many subjects in the Channel Islands that could form the basis of a Social Philately Collection. Two popular themes are the shipping and airline services into and out of the Islands. There also used to be a train service in Jersey. These are depicted on the Islands stamps and such collections can be enhanced with postcards, covers carried by air and advertising leaflets. Boat tickets and old airline timetables could also be added to these collections.
For example the Hotels of Sark could form a fascinating collection. Postcards could be collected from different periods. These would show the changes to the property occurring over the years. Hotel note paper and Hotel headed envelopes are very collectable. Hotel invoices, early brochures and adverts from Guide books would enhance the collection.
Old advertising covers from hotels which do not now exist could form the basis of an interesting historical collection. For example a cover is shown from the Hotel de Paris in Jersey, dated 1898. This hotel had been renamed the Mercantile Hotel by 1903.
